DESCRIPTION
ANGE JACQUES SUPPARO (Marseille, 1870-1948).
"Portrait of Sarah Bernhardt".
Watercolor on paper mounted on canvas. Restored
Signed.
Measurements: 33 x 56 x 2 cm.
The work of Ange Supparo, notably influenced by that of the medieval-feminine universe of Lucien Victor Guirand de Scévola, is palpable in this feminine portrait in all its splendor. It is very likely that she is the actress Sarah Bernhardt, whom she was able to meet in person thanks to her relationship with the painter Louise Abbèma, Bernhardt's sentimental partner.
Ange Supparo exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français and at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He was also an official painter for the French Ministry of Colonies, later resided in Madagascar and founded the School of Fine Arts of Antananarivo in 1913. In April 1900 Ange Supparo was the subject of a monographic exhibition entitled "Evocations of Women" at the Vignon Gallery in Paris. Several of the artist's works are now kept at the Musée du Quai Branly.
