Stuart Lloyd or Walter Stuart Lloyd was a painter of river and landscape scenes who was born in Upper Clapton, near Hackney, London. He was the son of James Lloyd, a publisher, and Hannah Helen Durham and his older brother, Thomas James Lloyd (1849-1910), was also an artist. In the late 1860s, the family moved to Walmer, in Kent, and sometime in the 1870s he went to Paris to study in Bonnat's studio.

On his return, he settled in Worcester. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1875, as well as at the Royal Society of British Artists, of which he was elected a member at the age of only 20, the youngest person ever to be a member. He also exhibited at Suffolk Street, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham, the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and elsewhere. In 1891 he won a gold medal at the annual Crystal Palace Exhibition for his painting "The Harvest Moon".
He spent his time traveling and painting rural, river and coastal landscapes of Britain, often with people working on boats and barges. His ability to capture the light and atmosphere of a scene earned him considerable success as an artist during his lifetime and has made his works enduringly popular.
There are examples of his paintings in Newport Museum, Salford Museum and Art Gallery, Sheffield Museum, Touchstones Rochdale, Towner Eastbourne and Worcester City Museum.
