This pair of small gouaches is distinguished by its careful work attentive to detail, practically miniaturist (a field in which Louis Nicolas Van Barenberghe excelled considerably). The meticulous technique is imbued with a palette rich in cerulean tones and pastels. Peasants go about their daily chores in rural landscapes in the heart of the French countryside.

Belonging to the Blarenberghe dynasty of painters from Flanders (Lille), Louis Nicolas lived in Paris, as did other family members dedicated to painting. All of them were descendants of Joris van Blarenberghe (1612-1670). Our painter resided at the Palace of Versailles with his son, also a painter, where they worked as miniaturists for the high society of their time. They were especially famous for their paintings on snuff boxes. Louis-Nicolas also worked as an official campaign painter for the French court, following the French army as a war reporter. His work acquired notable success in his time, being collected even by the Rothschild family. Today his work is kept at Waddesdon Manor (Rothschild collection), among other important institutions and private collections.
