The still life, also known as still life, has been one of the most relevant and appreciated genres in the history of art, particularly in Spanish painting. Although the rise of the still life as a pictorial theme occurred mainly in the Golden Age, throughout the 20th century, this genre underwent a remarkable transformation and a conceptual renewal that reflected the social, cultural and aesthetic changes of the time.
In 20th century Spanish painting, the still life remained an important genre, but it was stripped of the traditional conventions that linked it exclusively to the representation of everyday objects, such as fruits, flowers, domestic utensils or food. Artists such as Juan Gris, Salvador Dalí, Antonio López and other exponents of Spanish avant-garde art contributed to redefining this genre, endowing it with new philosophical and aesthetic dimensions.
One of the key aspects of the importance of the still life in 20th century Spanish painting was its ability to adapt to the formal and conceptual innovations of contemporary artistic movements such as cubism, surrealism and hyperrealism.
