DESCRIPTION

ALEXANDER ROBINSON (New Hampshire, USA, 1867 - 1952).
"Woman with Parrots," 1908.
Oil on canvas.
Signed at lower center. Dated 1908 and monogrammed at lower right.
Measurements: 100 x 80 cm; 118 x 98 cm (frame).

Alexander Robinson composes with great skill a mosaic of colors and intertwined forms. It transports us to his buoyant pictorial universe: a woman with a dress and a colorful scarf, three parrots with bright plumage and a bouquet of flowers that are cut out on a background with complex motifs. It is a dynamic and lively composition faithful to the style of the American painter.

Alexander Robinson began his studies at the Lowell Institute in Massachusetts before moving to Paris. There he enrolled at the Académie Julian, where he was a student of Henri-Lucien Doucet and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant. Robinson exhibited his work at prestigious salons such as the Salons des Indépendants, the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries, as well as participating in exhibitions in Ghent, Brussels, New York and London. He showed a particular affinity for watercolor. Upon returning to the United States, he maintained a strong connection with Europe, joining the National Society of Watercolorists and the United Arts Club of London, among other organizations. He traveled frequently to Belgium and Venice. In October 1911, the Detroit Museum of Art held a solo exhibition of more than fifty of his works. He also exhibited at the Boston Art Club, the Pennsylvania Academy and the Art Institute of Chicago. In addition, he taught in Venice, Belgium and Holland. Today, Alexander Robinson's work is in the collections of institutions such as the New Orleans Museum, the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and the Toledo Museum of Art in Toledo, Ohio.
