The painting "Cargo Ship in the Port of Rotterdam" impresses with its evocative depiction of maritime life. Delfgaauw's use of oil paint creates a richly textured scene in which the play of light and shadow animates the surface of the water and the shape of the ship. The balance between the solidity of the ship and the fluidity of the harbor environment invites the viewer to a moment of contemplation within a dynamic industrial backdrop. The overall impression is one of tranquility and movement, an eloquent synthesis of structure and atmosphere.

Gerardus Johannes was a self-taught Dutch painter who was mainly active in Rijswijk from 1914 onwards. He became known for his evocative landscapes, urban views and harbor scenes, especially from around Rotterdam and The Hague. His impressionistic-naturalistic approach is characterized by a masterful handling of light, especially in his reflections on water. During his career, he briefly used the pseudonym H. van Gessel, probably to maintain consistent quality amid high demand, sometimes at the request of art dealers. His works continue to be celebrated for their sensitivity and composition, appearing in exhibitions and collections during and after his lifetime.
