These two paintings, belonging to the Spanish school of the early 19th century, represent scenes of local customs that capture with vividness aspects of the popular and festive life of the rural environment. In both compositions, the artist resorts to a warm and earthy palette, as well as a loose and dynamic treatment of the brush, to convey the bustling and spontaneous atmosphere of community gatherings.
The first panel depicts an open-air fair or market, where multiple figures are grouped around stalls and tables, engaged in everyday activities such as trade or conversation. The second scene shows a moment of recreation and country dancing, in which men and women, accompanied by musicians, express collective joy through movement and music.
These works reflect the spirit of pictorial costumbrismo, a trend that emerged in response to the interest in documenting the customs, traditions and social types of the time. Through a close and human gaze, the artist manages to preserve the visual memory of the popular, exalting cultural identity and daily life as opposed to the great historical or mythological themes that had dominated academic art.
