DESCRIPTION

SEVERO RODRIGUEZ ETCHART (Buenos Aires, 1865 -1903).
"Female portrait".1888.
Oil on canvas
Relined.

Measurements: 66.5 x 46 cm; 58 x 77.5 cm (frame).

This painting is inscribed in the most refined aspect of the production of Severo Rodriguez Etchart, characterized by a figuration of classic root, intimate and of great technical delicacy. The work presents a half-length female figure, treated with a soft modeling and a carefully veiled flesh, which refers to the tradition of the idealized portrait and the fin-de-siècle symbolic nude.

The face, with its melancholy expression and self-absorbed gaze, concentrates the psychological axis of the composition. The dark and warm background, worked with an enveloping and material brushstroke, enhances the effect of recollection and directs the attention towards the figure, which emerges with a soft and enveloping light. The treatment of the skin -transparent, almost pearly- reveals a solid technical mastery and a sensibility close to symbolism and poetic realism, moving away from any narrative anecdote to an allegorical and timeless terrain.

Within Etchart's production, this work can be placed in his mature stage, when his pictorial language reaches a balance between academic rigor and personal lyricism. Here the artist is especially interested in the female figure as the bearer of moods and universal values -beauty, introspection, silence-, a constant in his career. The painting does not seek a rupturist modernity, but the continuity of a refined pictorial tradition, interpreted with contemporary sensibility.

Severo Rodríguez Etchart's work was mainly centered on portraits, the female figure and allegorical compositions, standing out for his careful drawing, his mastery of color and a special interest in the psychological atmosphere of his characters. He studied at the Colegio Nacional and later at the Academia de la Sociedad Estímulo de Bellas Artes, in Buenos Aires. In 1879 he traveled to Turin to study at the Albertina Academy and then to Paris to perfect his skills at the Académie Julian, with masters William Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury.

Rodriguez Etchart represents a pictorial sensibility that links the nineteenth-century tradition with the symbolism and intimate realism of the first third of the twentieth century, establishing himself as an author appreciated for the technical quality and poetic tone of his work.
