"Musician characters".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 22 x 16 cm, 19 x 24,5 cm (frame).
Lively popular scene starring two strolling musicians in full movement. The figures, cut out in the foreground on an open landscape of soft mountains and wide sky, appear captured with great dynamism and expressiveness. The figure on the left, dressed in a tight yellow jacket and high boots, advances with an energetic gesture while raising his wind instrument. At his side, another musician covered with a wide red cape and wide-brimmed hat accompanies the scene, turning his body with marked theatricality.
The composition stands out for the vivid chromatic contrast between the ochers and yellows of one figure and the intense red of the cape, a resource that accentuates the visual rhythm of the scene. The brushstroke is loose and vibrant, especially in the treatment of the faces and the folds of the clothes, giving the characters an expressive and almost caricatural character. The costumbrista subject matter, centered on popular types and festive scenes, as well as the compositional spontaneity and the interest in movement, refer directly to the models developed by Goya in his genre scenes, reinterpreted here with a more direct and picturesque language typical of the Spanish school of the early 19th century.
