DESCRIPTION
Spanish school of the late nineteenth-early twentieth century.
"Orientalist scene".
Watercolor on paper.
Signed "Sorolla" (apocryphal signature) in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 18 x 23 cm; 33 x 38 cm (frame).
Scene of orientalist character set in an urban landscape of North Africa, where several figures dressed in traditional costumes pass through a street that leads to a monumental gate of Islamic architecture. The composition opens towards a wide landscape in which buildings and a minaret in the background are distinguished, configuring a luminous and evocative scene of Mediterranean and Maghrebi environments.
The work is done with a loose and transparent watercolor technique, which takes advantage of the whiteness of the paper to build the luminosity of the scene. The palette, dominated by ochers, blues and soft earthy tones, contributes to recreate a warm and sunny atmosphere, while the small figures animate the space with quick and synthetic brushstrokes.
