This work is inscribed within a pictorial tradition that in Catalonia combined the interest for the romantic landscape with a progressive opening towards naturalism and the taste for the historical-painterly. In this context, the so-called Catalan School was not a homogeneous movement, but a group of artists trained in local academies and in centers such as the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona, who shared a common sensitivity towards the observation of the environment, the recovery of the medieval past and the construction of landscapes with a strong evocative charge.
During the 19th century, Catalan painting evolved from an initial romanticism, interested in ruins, castles and idealized scenarios, towards a greater interest in the plausible representation of the territory, especially through landscape and history painting. This duality is reflected in works such as the present one, where medieval architecture acts as a symbol of the historical past, while nature is presented as a living space, dominated by light and atmosphere.
The compositional treatment, with great spatial depth, enveloping vegetation and figures integrated into the scene, responds to an aesthetic very characteristic of nineteenth-century Catalan taste, in which painting sought to balance narrative, setting and descriptive rigor. In this sense, the Catalan School of the 19th century played a fundamental role in the consolidation of its own landscape tradition, which would lay the foundations for later developments in modernism and landscape painting at the turn of the century.
