DESCRIPTION

European school; XIX century.
"Christ among the doctors".
Oil on copper.
Signed.
Measurements: 85 x 107 cm; 99 x 122 cm (frame).
The present composition, entitled Christ among the doctors, belongs to the European school of the 19th century and represents one of the most significant episodes of the childhood of Christ narrated in the Gospel of St. Luke, when the young Jesus remains in the Temple of Jerusalem dialoguing with the doctors of the Law and surprising the wise men by his knowledge and understanding of the Scriptures. The scene, of profound theological content, symbolizes the early revelation of Christ's divine nature and spiritual authority even before the beginning of his public life.
The work fully responds to the historicist and academic sensibility characteristic of nineteenth-century European religious painting. The composition is organized in a balanced manner around the central figure of Christ, whose youthfulness, serenity and luminosity contrast with the meditative and surprised expressions of the doctors surrounding him. The inclusion of the Virgin and St. Joseph on the right side also introduces the narrative moment of the finding of the Child in the Temple, reinforcing the human and emotional character of the scene.
From the stylistic point of view, the painting reveals a precise drawing, soft modeling and a clear and harmonious chromatism, features of the academic tradition of the nineteenth century. The detail in the vestments, the idealization of the physical types and the careful architectural setting respond to the historicist interest of the time to recreate the sacred stories with verisimilitude and decorum. As a whole, the work is a representative example of nineteenth-century European religious painting, conceived both as an instrument of moral and spiritual teaching and as an expression of technical and narrative refinement.
