Joan Brull trained at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he stood out as an exceptional student. Influenced by the realism of his teacher Simón Gómez Polo, he began his career by focusing on genre and historical subjects such as “The Tonsure of King Wamba,” exhibited at the Parés Gallery in Barcelona in 1883. During these years, he also became involved with the Modernist movement and Symbolist aesthetics, influences that shaped much of his work. He later moved to Paris, where he completed his training under Raphael Cöllin for five years. His style evolved in an increasingly personal direction, moving away from realism toward a “fin de siècle” idealism. Nevertheless, he remained interested in history painting, genre scenes, and portraits, achieving great mastery in the latter. Upon his return to Spain, he participated in numerous group exhibitions in Madrid and Barcelona, as well as abroad in London and Paris. He also entered works in the National Fine Arts Exhibitions in Madrid, where he received awards in 1892, 1895, 1897, and 1899. At the exhibitions held in Barcelona, he was also honored in the editions of 1894, 1896, 1898, 1907, and 1911. He won third prize at the 1900 Paris Exposition and was named Commander of the Order of Alfonso XII in 1904. He also served as an art critic for the magazine “Joventut.” Setting aside academic rigor, Brull Vinyoles soon devoted himself to pictorial idealism, to which he dedicated his entire body of work. A man of great culture, he actively participated in the literary gatherings of Els Quatre Gats. His technique of blurred contours, grisaille, and pearlescent tones, as well as his subject matter populated by ethereal female figures, place his work within the realm of Romantic Symbolism. Following his untimely death, the Parés Gallery in Barcelona dedicated a tribute exhibition to him (1913). Brull’s works are represented in the Prado Museum, the National Art Museum of Catalonia, the La Garrotxa Museum in Girona, and the Casa Lis Museum of Art Nouveau and Art Deco in Salamanca.
