DESCRIPTION

Dutch school of the twentieth century. Possibly WOUT AUBURG (first half of the 20th century).
"Street Scene," ca. 1920.
Engraved linoleum.
Signed with initials WA.
Measurements: 46 x 48 cm; 54 x 56 cm (frame).

Note that the depressions in the engravings have been made with white, a technique used by the engravers to visualize the effect of their work. This highlighting of the white in the hollows further enhances the cubist character of the work, its originality and modernity.
We see in this work a direct homage to the cubism of the early twentieth century, to the plastic and aesthetic research of Braque and Picasso, the result being an analytical representation, which breaks down space and objects into planes. It shows us a monochromatic scenario with multiple characters, described through the capture of different points of view in a single image; the synthesis is no longer reduced to what the eye sees, but to what the mind knows there is.
