Female portrait in which the author presents a mature lady, wearing a black dress with wide V-neckline. The artist uses a quick brushstroke that added to the leaden tones bring a certain vaporousness to the scene. The neutral background enhances the figure and the elegance of her attire. The lady looks directly at the viewer with a faint smile, but without losing a regal and haughty attitude.
The portrait genre was especially popular during this period. In the 20th century, the portrait maintained a prominent position within the Spanish artistic panorama, consolidating itself as a key genre for the exploration of individual and collective identity in a context of profound social, political and cultural transformations. Far from being limited to the physical representation of the model, portraiture in this period became an expressive vehicle that allowed artists to reflect on the psychology of the subject, his environment and his time.
