Spanish painting of the beginning of the XX century, of late romantic filiation, that conjugates the intimacy of the domestic portrait with a subtle narrative evocation. In the center of the composition, a young mother, with black hair tied back with a ribbon and dark eyes of melancholic intensity, holds in her lap a child whose features (wide eyes, full lips, smooth skin) sweetly replicate those of the mother, underlining the filial bond. She wears a cobalt blue blouse, which stands out strongly against the yellow scarf that waves lightly around her neck, as if moved by a sea breeze. This detail, together with the sails that can be guessed in the misty background, suggests the possible location on a boat, giving the whole an air of crossing, of emotional or physical transit.
