This still life, belonging to the Spanish school of the 20th century, presents an exuberant and meticulously detailed composition, which evokes the baroque tradition of the 17th century. In a natural setting with a mountainous background, a variety of elements that allude to abundance and luxury are carefully arranged: fresh fruits such as grapes, pears, citrus fruits and melon; vegetables such as asparagus and cauliflower; as well as game, a deer, a pheasant and a swan, seafood and table objects such as a wine glass, a golden jug and flowers in ornamental vases. The chromatic richness and the arrangement in superimposed planes reinforce the idea of opulence, while the inclusion of the perishable and the dead introduces an implicit reflection on the transience of life, typical of the vanitas theme.
