ARTHUR MARIA RENER (Belgium, 1912-1991)
Untitled.
Oil on tablex.

Measurements: 80 x 120 cm; 105 x 145 cm (frame).
Attractive scene of metaphysical character, constructed from a mental architecture in which naked human figures, geometric spaces and organic elements of neuronal appearance coexist. The tree, with its luminous ramifications and almost biological structure, functions as the symbolic axis of the composition, evoking vital connections, thought networks or transformation processes. The space refers to a utopian and timeless conception, close to magical realism and certain currents of late surrealism.
The clear and controlled palette, together with the formal precision of the drawing, reinforces an atmosphere of silence and contemplation, where the human body appears integrated in an orderly but disturbing cosmos.
Arthur Maria Rener was a multifaceted Belgian artist whose career stands out for the use of diverse plastic languages and a singular artistic identity. His real name was René Plompteux. He was born in Bressoux (Liège) and died in Waterloo (Brussels). He was the brother of the artist Léopold Plompteux. Self-taught, he covered disciplines such as painting, engraving, sculpture, drawing and watercolor. He was a member of the Fantasmagie group, founded by figures such as Jean-Jacques Gaillard and Marc Eemans. He exhibited in prominent venues, such as the Nellens G.J. Gallery in Knokke during 1971. During the 1950s, his work focused on figurative compositions and sensual nudes. He is especially known for his dreamlike landscapes and surrealistic scenes.
