DESCRIPTION
JORGE CASTILLO (Pontevedra, 1933).
"Reclining prostitute" 1993.
Acrylic on canvas.
Signed.
Titled and dated on the stretcher frame.
Measurements: 81 x 100 cm.
Representative work of the symbolic figuration of Jorge Castillo, in which the female body is treated in a monumental and frontal way, with simplified contours and an intense and unnatural palette dominated by acid greens, ochres and pinks. The scene, deliberately ambiguous, combines intimacy and distancing, reinforced by the presence of secondary elements that introduce a metaphorical and psychological reading. The flat composition and controlled chromaticism underline the introspective and narrative character of his mature production.
Jorge Castillo is an essential figure of contemporary Spanish art, linked since the sixties to the New Figuration. His work, strongly symbolic and literary, oscillates between figuration and abstraction. He is represented in important public collections such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the IVAM, the Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao and various international institutions.
