DESCRIPTION
JOAN BROTAT VILANOVA (Barcelona, 1923 - 1990).
"Composition", 50's.
Matter - oil/cardboard adhered to board.
Signed in the inferior zone.
Measurements: 24 x 38 cm; 27 x 41 cm (frame).
In this work the artist displays a deliberately naïf and vibrant style, where the color and the apparent formal simplicity become vehicles of a poetic and deeply personal expression.
Joan Brotat was trained at the School of Arts and Crafts and at the Ateneo Obrero in Barcelona, decisive spaces for the construction of a personal artistic language, far from academicism. In 1950 he participated for the first time in an exhibition, invited by Angel Marsà to the Cycle of Experimental Art, and that same year he presented his first solo exhibition at the El Jardín gallery in Barcelona, marking the beginning of a rapidly expanding career.
Since then, his work was continuously present in the Salones de Mayo and Octubre in Barcelona and, progressively, he reached an international projection that resulted in more than a hundred exhibitions in different countries. Throughout his career he was distinguished with important awards, including the Grand Prize of the Mediterranean Countries of Alexandria (1961), the Rafael Zabaleta Gold Medal and the City of Tarrasa Award.
Brotat's work is part of important public collections, such as the CDAN of the Beulas Foundation of Huesca, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona, the Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao, the Museums of Modern Art of Madrid and Alexandria, as well as the Municipal Museum of Valls.
