DESCRIPTION

MAX NEUMANN (Saarbrücken, Germany, 1949)
"Satan", 1986.
Mixed media on cardboard.
Signed and dated in the upper area. Titled on the back.
Measurements: 103 x 73 cm.
In "Satan", the artist does not represent the devil from a traditional religious iconography, but as a set of forms and a stylized human face, almost archetypal, embodying psychological tensions rather than biblical narratives. The image, reduced to the essentials and executed with an economy of formal resources, conveys unease and confronts the viewer with a direct, frontal and silent presence. In the context of post-war Germany and the Cold War, the work can be read as a reflection on the human condition, evil and identity, rather than as a literal religious allegory. Neumann explores the demonic as a constitutive part of the modern subject,
The German painter Max Neumann has participated in numerous solo exhibitions in German and foreign galleries, as well as exhibitions at the Saarland Museum, Saarbrücken, and the Folkwang Museum, Essen, two of the most renowned German museums of contemporary art, which shows that Max Neumann is a recognized artist whose work is represented in important institutional, public and private collections around the world.
