From the stylistic point of view, the painting evidences a clear debt with the postimpressionism and certain fauvist derivations: the color is not limited to describe, but it models the form and defines the space. The greens and blues of the background, applied in large flat and vibrant areas, contrast with the warm tones of the face, generating a chromatic balance that gives unity to the composition. The brushstroke is loose, visible, and avoids a polished finish in favor of a lively surface, where the pictorial matter retains its autonomy. This treatment reveals a conception of painting as a process rather than a mere reproduction. The figure, constructed by means of soft contours and chromatic transitions, is integrated into the space without a strict separation between background and foreground, a characteristic resource of a certain contemporary French painting that dilutes the traditional hierarchy of planes.
In this sense, the piece can be understood as heir to a school that, from Henri Matisse to the late figurative currents of the twentieth century, has privileged the expressiveness of color and the freedom of the brushstroke as vehicles of visual knowledge.
