The appearance of Tono Carbajo in the art world begins with his paintings of the eighties, in which the use of abundant matter, poured paint and the involvement of the body in the gesture is fundamental. The evolution of his work has been towards the simplification of forms. Conceptualization and experimentation with materials: wooden beams, books, bells, windows and neon tubes are assembled on the canvas together with painting and photography. The rupture of the rectangular format and the two-dimensionality of the painting is one of the constants in his work. The goal is to expand the limits of painting, incorporating new materials and moving towards the third dimension. In parallel, the artist produces since the eighties, installations and video-installations in which he proposes the recovery of memory as artistic material, the interest in social issues, the city or the work with his own biography and his personal itinerary as a starting point for the development of his pieces. Also very characteristic of his work are the games of opposites such as cold-warm, painting-photography, two-dimensionality-spatiality and a long etc. that besides being part of his personal poetics, allow him great freedom in the formal treatment of his works, playing with tensions, balances, paradoxes and metaphors.
