This painting, made around 1910 within the scope of the French school, reflects the atmospheric and luminous sensibility inherited from the late impressionism. The scene, a calm river that crosses a scarcely inhabited landscape, does not look for the detailed description of the place, but the evocation of a visual and emotional experience linked to nature. The sky, constructed with vibrant, diagonal brushstrokes, dominates the composition and conveys a sense of movement and humidity, while the waters subtly reproduce the muted hues of the afternoon.
The work is part of the French landscape tradition of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, marked by an interest in changes of light, direct observation of the environment and the capture of fleeting impressions. The loose brushstrokes, the diffuse contours and the earthy palette with greenish and ochre reflections refer to an aesthetic close to Impressionism and the lyrical naturalism developed in the French regional schools.
