The choice of the cliff as a motif responds to a very characteristic interest of the European painting of the late nineteenth century and first half of the twentieth century: the landscape understood not only as a topographical description, but as an emotional and contemplative experience.
The watercolor technique is particularly suitable for this type of representation. The fluidity of the pigments and the transparencies of the paper allow the construction of an image based on light variations and atmospheric effects rather than on a meticulous definition of the forms. In this context, the landscape acquires an almost changing appearance, where the sky, the sea and the rock seem to merge through glazes and subtle chromatic gradations. The work probably prioritizes visual immediacy and spontaneity of execution, fundamental qualities in much of modern European watercolor. From a stylistic point of view, this type of composition is often related to the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist heritage, especially those currents that explored the effects of natural light and atmospheric transformations of the coastal landscape.
