The work can be contextualized within the persistence of the figurative tradition in France during the first half of the twentieth century. While the historical avant-gardes radically transformed the European artistic language, numerous painters continued exploring the feminine nude from renewed classical parameters, sometimes close to art deco, poetic realism or certain neoclassical currents. In this context, the female body ceased to be only an academic ideal and became a symbol of modern elegance, autonomy and visual sophistication.
The pose, carefully studied, combines naturalness and artifice. The body is organized in a stable pyramidal structure, while the inclination of the head and the raised gaze introduce an introspective and slightly theatrical dimension. The treatment of the face and hairstyle, as well as the accentuated make-up of the lips and eyes, also refer to the canons of cinematic beauty of the 1930s and 1940s. This places the painting in an intermediate territory between the idealized portrait, the academic study and the glamorous aesthetics of modern visual culture.
