The treatment of light is remarkable. The light comes from the upper right, filtering through the tree leaves. This creates a strong contrast that highlights the texture of his white beard, the volume of the folds in his white shirt, and the lines on his weary face.
Earth tones, greens, and ochres typical of the forest predominate, masterfully broken up by the vibrant pattern of red and gray stripes on his handkerchief, immediately drawing the viewer’s gaze to the subject’s face.
