Manuel Alejandro Pérez Marrero, Cuban painter born in 1983, is an outstanding figure within the contemporary artistic panorama of the island. Graduated in Plastic Arts from the Instituto Superior Félix Varela, he has developed an oeuvre that functions as a poetic window to Cuba's urban life, especially to Havana, the city that becomes the protagonist of his compositions. Through a vibrant palette and a deeply expressive approach, his paintings manage to capture the essence of Cuban everyday life, freezing fleeting moments in which architecture, light and popular culture intertwine to reveal both the beauty and the contradictions that define the country's identity.
Since his first exhibitions in the mid-2000s, Pérez Marrero's trajectory has been upward, consolidating himself nationally and internationally. His participation in group exhibitions in institutions such as the Casa de Cultura Provincial de Santa Clara (2005), the Universidad Pedagógica Félix Varela (2006), and the Benito Ortiz Gallery in Trinidad (2010), among others, gave way to an increasingly recognized presence in spaces of greater projection. His first personal exhibition took place at the Municipal Museum of Sagua La Grande in 2007, and from then on he continued to exhibit regularly, both inside and outside Cuba.
Throughout his career he has exhibited in cities such as Miami, Copenhagen, Havana and Madrid, reflecting a growing interest in his work in diverse cultural contexts. Particularly noteworthy are his solo show at the Museum of History in Trinidad in 2012, his participation in the Stamp Art Gallery in Miami in 2017, his solo exhibition in Denmark in 2020, and the permanent show inaugurated at the Palacio de Arenas in Sagua La Grande in 2021. More recently, he has presented his work at the Museum of Photography in Havana (2023) and at the Colina Fine-Art Gallery in Madrid (2024), confirming his international projection and the validity of his pictorial language.
Manuel Alejandro Pérez Marrero has managed to position himself as a visual chronicler of contemporary Cuba, whose works, present in private collections in various parts of the world, invite a sensitive and complex reading of the Cuban urban environment, approached not from nostalgia, but from the vitality and honesty of a gaze committed to its time and context.
