This bust is not only a sculpture, but a masterpiece of metalwork, showing the excellence of 19th century craftsmanship and the romantic vision of the Orient of the time. This is an original and exquisite 19th century French silver plated and gilded bronze bust of an orientalist on an onyx base, embodying the fascination with oriental aesthetics prevalent at the time. Picard print.
The combination of gilt bronze and silver plating creates a striking contrast, with the warm golden tones of the bronze complementing the cool, reflective surface of the silver.
The young woman is meticulously and delicately sculpted, displaying an idealized beauty with almond-shaped eyes, high cheekbones and full lips. Her expression is serene, yet seductive, capturing a sense of mystery and exoticism. The artist portrayed the figure with a type of headdress called a fez, adorned with an intricate tassel that falls gracefully, bringing movement and grace to the sculpture.
The bust is richly decorated and adorned with coins and pearls, suggesting her opulent attire, while her bodice mimics sumptuous fabrics. All details are executed with the utmost precision in metalwork.
One feature that stands out among many is the pair of removable earrings that dangle elegantly from the bust's ears.
This bust is not just a sculpture, but a masterpiece of metalwork, showcasing the excellence of 19th century craftsmanship and the romantic vision of the Orient of the time.
Henri Picard settled in Paris at 6 rue Jarente from 1831 to 1839, and later at 10 rue de la Perle from 1840 to 1864. He worked on the gilding of the rooms of Emperor Napoleon III in the Louvre Palace. His production was characterized by its richness and refinement, such as a Japanese-style inkwell or his Pompeian-style dining table centerpieces.
