Band and band of knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of Civil Merit, a Spanish decoration instituted in the 20th century. The piece is composed of two main elements: a blue silk band with white fillets and a pendant medal, made of gilded and enameled silver, which shows a cross with blue and white enameled arms, with a circular center with the monogram of the founding monarch surrounded by a green enameled laurel wreath, symbol of honor and virtue. Both are presented in their cases.
Orders and decorations have played, since the Middle Ages, a central role in the configuration of honor and merit systems within European monarchies. In Spain, these institutions evolved from the ancient military orders of chivalry to the modern civil orders, which reflect the recognition of merit beyond the military sphere, incorporating public service, culture, diplomacy and charity.
The Order of Civil Merit symbolizes this transition to a modern conception of honor, where civic virtue and commitment to the nation replace war valor as a source of prestige. In the context of the twentieth century, its creation responds to a desire to institutionalize the gratitude of the State towards those who contribute to the common good from the civilian sphere, in tune with the administrative and social reforms promoted by the monarchy.
