Pair of plates example of historicist craftsmanship produced in Madrid in 1909. Executed in 925 sterling silver, both plates reveal an exceptional technical mastery in metalwork, characterized by a deep embossing, a high relief modeling and a meticulously planned ornamentation.
Stylistically, they belong to the historicism of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a movement that recovers forms, iconographies and ornamental languages of past periods, in this case, motifs that evoke the warrior iconography of Late Antiquity and the Baroque repertoire, combined with a modern sense of composition. The border, profusely decorated with vegetal scrolls, scrolls and masks, is integrated with the central medallion, where a narrative scene of epic character unfolds: a war chariot, soldiers with spears and shields, architecture in the background and fallen figures in the foreground. The depth of the relief suggests a deliberate effort to endow the scene with drama, movement and narrative density, features highly appreciated in the historicist repertoire.
