DESCRIPTION

CASPAR RISS (17th-18th century).
Christ, Ausburg, 1690.
Solid silver.
Punches on the sole of the foot.
Weight: 998 gr.
Measurements: 32 x 26 cm (Christ); 51 x 36 cm (frame).

Remarkable piece of Augsburg goldsmithery, the most prestigious metallurgical center in Europe during the 17th century. Created by the renowned master Caspar Riss around 1690, this Christ represents the culmination of the German Baroque, a period where dramatic expressiveness was combined with unparalleled technical expertise. The meticulously modeled anatomy reflects a profound study of the natural, capturing the muscular tension and serenity of the sacrifice with a mastery that only the great silversmiths of the time were able to achieve.

The use of solid silver, unusual in sculptures of this format due to its high cost, reinforces the sumptuary and devotional character of the work. The visible punches guarantee both authenticity and provenance, and the weight of nearly a kilo underlines its material value, as well as its artistic value.

This type of crucifix was destined for private oratories, noble chapels or high-ranking ecclesiastical collections, and today it is considered a piece of great value and rarity.
