DESCRIPTION

Goblet; Royal Vienna, 19th century.
Glazed porcelain, partially gilded.
Marked on the base.
Measurements: 38 x 13 x 13 cm.
The piece fully embodies this late Neoclassical style. Its elegant architectural profile—featuring a cylindrical body rising from a stylized cup-shaped foot and topped by a lid crowned with a gilded finial—evokes the ceremonial and decorative forms characteristic of the Viennese imperial repertoire. The rich polychromy combines backgrounds in shades of pink and aqua green with profuse gold decoration featuring delicate scrollwork, classically inspired borders, and palmette motifs—elements characteristic of the ornamental refinement associated with 19th-century Viennese porcelain. The main scene is of particular interest. This type of representation derives directly from academic painting and the neoclassical repertoire popularized by artists such as Angelica Kauffmann, as well as from 18th-century decorative models, which were highly prized in Viennese porcelain. The scene is framed as if it were a small easel painting, a common feature in Royal Vienna porcelain.
Royal Vienna porcelain refers to pieces produced by the Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Vienna, founded in 1718. It was the second-oldest hard-paste porcelain factory in Europe, after Meissen. Although the original factory closed permanently in 1864, the term “Royal Vienna” is still used today to refer both to the original historical pieces and to the numerous high-quality reproductions produced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
