DESCRIPTION

Pair of boxes; France, 19th century.
Silver with onyx and gold inlays.
Measurements: 3 x 11 x 7 cm; 2 x 9 x 5 cm.
Weight: 372 g.
This pair of boxes is a striking example of the decorative style that characterized 19th-century French silverwork, a period in which technical virtuosity and the revival of historical styles reached remarkable heights. Crafted in silver and embellished with black onyx inlays, the pieces reveal a predilection for the contrast between precious materials—a technique widely employed by Parisian workshops- Their design reflects the eclectic aesthetic typical of the century, in which motifs inherited from the Rococo and Neoclassical periods coexisted and were reinterpreted. The profuse chiseled decoration on the sides—comprising scrolls, foliage, and highly dynamic cartouches—evokes the ornamental exuberance of the 18th century, while the symmetrical composition of the lids, organized around a classically inspired garland against a polished onyx background, introduces a counterpoint of balance and restraint. The small central detail in gold, conceived as a delicate visual accent, highlights the craftsmanship’s attention to detail.
Taken together, this pair of boxes embodies some of the most representative features of nineteenth-century French decorative arts: mastery of goldsmithing, excellence in craftsmanship, and the ability to reinterpret historical styles in exquisitely crafted objects. Their balance between ornamental richness and formal elegance makes them a remarkable example of 19th-century domestic art and a testament to the high standard achieved by French silversmithing during an era of extraordinary artistic creativity.
