This miniature table clock, made in Austria between the sixties and nineties of the nineteenth century, belongs to the tradition of the Viennese watchmaking goldsmiths of small format, intended for cabinets, showcases and collections of precious objects. Its small scale, combined with its technical and decorative richness, places it in the category of a luxury and curiosity object (Kunstkammerstück).

The architectural box, conceived as a small temple, is made of silver with hallmarks, entirely covered with fine polychrome enamels. On a deep red background are enameled figurative scenes of gallant and pastoral inspiration, framed by delicate golden scrolls. This type of iconography and technique is reminiscent of the historicist taste of the 19th century, particularly appreciated in Central Europe.

The Solomonic columns at the corners, the stepped base and the sculptural top reinforce the monumental character of the design, deliberately contrasted with the reduced scale of the piece. The sphere, of clear reading, is harmoniously integrated into the decorative program without detracting from the enameled ensemble.

These pieces were not intended for everyday use, but as objects of prestige, demonstrations of technical virtuosity and decorative refinement, highly appreciated by the cultured bourgeoisie and the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy.
