DESCRIPTION

Empire style table clock; France, 19th century.

Signed on the dial "Le Guent à Paris".
Measurements: 50 x 38 x 13 cm.
This type of clocks arises in the context of the Empire style, promoted in France after the Revolution and consolidated during the Napoleonic period, when the decorative arts are put at the service of an aesthetic of order, grandeur and reference to classical antiquity. Beyond their horological function, these pieces were destined to occupy a central place in living room or cabinet furniture, acting as authentic visual manifestations of the cultured taste and social prestige of their owners.
Empire style table clock, made of gilded and patinated bronze, France, 19th century, signed on the dial "Le Guent à Paris". The piece is conceived as a sculptural ensemble of strong neoclassical imprint, where the body of the clock is flanked by two allegorical figures of Greco-Roman inspiration: Apollo playing the lyre and a female figure carrying garlands, associated with abundance and the arts. The decorative repertoire is completed with reliefs of carefully chiseled amour, scrolls and laurels that frame the enameled sphere.
From the artistic point of view, the clock stands out for the quality of the sculptural modeling, the richness of the gilding and the balance between architectural mass and freestanding figures, achieving a clear and monumental composition.
