Dress made in batik with the skirt embroidered in cross-stitch, belonging to the Miao or Hmong people of the Kaiyuan area, in the Chinese province of Yunnan. They are one of the officially recognised nationalities in China and currently number around six million people. They are mainly found in the mountainous areas of southwest China, although there are also Miao populations in Vietnam, Burma and northern Thailand, and even in South America, specifically in French Guiana, brought from Laos by the French government in 1977 in order to populate the territory. The Miao are socially organised in clans, with subdivisions depending on each county and comarca.
