The Sailor Moon series, created by Naoko Takeuchi, is one of the most iconic anime of the 1990s and a fundamental reference of the mahō shōjo (magical girls) genre. The story follows Usagi Tsukino, a seemingly awkward and carefree teenager who discovers her destiny as a magical warrior tasked with protecting the Earth from evil under the identity of Sailor Moon.
Throughout the series, Usagi joins other female warriors - the Sailor Scouts - each with distinct abilities and personalities, forming a group that combines friendship, bravery and personal growth. Under a narrative that mixes romance, action and fantasy, the series addresses themes such as love, sacrifice, identity and the struggle between good and evil.
First aired in 1992, Sailor Moon not only won over Japanese audiences, but became a global phenomenon that redefined the role of female protagonists in anime. Its distinctive aesthetics, with brilliant transformations and iconic costumes, as well as its emotional tone, have kept it relevant for generations.
