DESCRIPTION
Elephant. Brussels, XVIII century.
Glazed ceramic.
Measurements: 20 x 30 x 12 cm.
Elephant made in Belgian ceramics. It dates from the eighteenth century and stands out for the careful work of firing and enameling by hand. The pachyderm is also the most popular animal for decorative purposes, since it is considered to be the bearer of good fortune. The Netherlands and Belgium, in centers such as Antwerp, Delf and Brussels, have an established tradition in pottery, refined in its decorations painted in quality enamel. Since the 16th century, the white tin glaze used allowed Dutch potters to approach the quality and appearance of Chinese porcelain, highly valued in the country and introduced by the Dutch East India Company.
