BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

PIERRE D'AVESN (France, 1901 - 1990/91).
Art Deco vase, ca. 1930.
"Tigers."
In cut glass.
Signed.
Measurements: 23 x 17 x 17 cm.

Ornamental vase in thick glass, design by Pierre d'Avesn, slightly atrompetado body, with tropical plant decoration around the walls and a frieze of tigers carved on the base. Fully in keeping with the elegant aesthetics of Art Deco.

Pierre D'Avesn, whose real name was Pierre Gire, studied at the School of Decorative Arts in Paris, and with only fourteen years entered to work in the firm of René Lalique, where he learned the arts of glass with this great master. He worked with Lalique for twelve years, and for him he designed some of the most famous pieces of the firm, such as the "Serpent" and "Tourbillons" vases. In 1927 he began working for Daum, designing and supervising the production of its Luneville factory, specializing in Art Deco glass for export, mainly to the United States. However, the factory closed in 1932 due to the Depression, and between 1937 and 1940 D'Avesn worked for Verlys. Although it is not known for sure, it is possible that after World War II he continued to work for the art glass industry, probably in Choisy-Le-Roi/Sèvres.
