BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
Azumbre wine jug; Puente del Arzobispo; late 18th century.
Ceramic.
Measurements: 20 x 15 cm; 17 x 13 cm.
Lot consists of two wine jugs with measurements of one azumbre the larger one, and half an azumbre the smaller one. The pottery is made on a potter's wheel with a creamy white glaze exterior and brush-painted decoration in green, yellow, ochre or orange and black, forming stripes or borders superimposed between concentric stripes all over the exterior.
The colors used (yellows, greens and browns among others) place the work within the series that made the centers of Talavera and Puente del Arzobispo most famous for the richness and perfection of its pieces, both in the shapes and in the colors and finishes. Although it begins in the 16th century with pieces of Italian influence, it is in the following century when the coloring is enriched with various shades of green and the themes with bullfighting scenes, hunting in landscapes and characters. Everything would culminate in the 18th century, with a greater variety and an outstanding technical perfection.
Although Talavera was the best known center of production, the Puente del Arzobispo was inspired both in its themes and techniques.
