ÉMILE GALLÉ (Nancy, France, 1846 - 1904).
Vase.
Etched glass.
Signed.
Measurements: 60,5 x 17,5 cm.
Wheel engraved art glass vase, linked to the Art Nouveau movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Its stylized silhouette, elongated neck and wide base, denotes a clear intention to harmonize the shape with the decoration. On the surface, a delicate technical work can be appreciated. In this case, the scene depicted is a sailing ship, whose dark silhouette contrasts with the warm, twilight tones of the background, suggesting a marine atmosphere at sunset.
The piece features the signature of Émile Gallé (1846-1904), a French master glassmaker, cabinetmaker and designer considered one of the leading exponents of Art Nouveau. Gallé was born in Nancy, a city that would become the epicenter of the artistic movement known as the École de Nancy, dedicated to exalting nature and craftsmanship in the face of industrialization. His training included studies in botany, chemistry and drawing, which allowed him to develop an exceptional sensitivity to integrate the natural sciences with artistic creation.
In his glass production, Gallé experimented with new techniques, such as marquetry glass and acid etching, endowing his pieces with a visual poetry that blended symbolism, naturalistic observation and technical innovation. Each object conceived by him seems to tell a story, evoking landscapes, flowers or marine scenes, such as this vase, where the sailboat becomes a metaphor for the journey, the passage of time and the dialogue between matter and light.
