BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

"The broken bridge". MEISSEN, 19th century
According to rococo models of the 18th century.
Porcelain enameled sculptural group.
With manufacturing mark on the base.
Measurements: 24 x 15 x 12 cm.

Sculptural group in enameled porcelain belonging to the manufacture of Meissen, representing the famous gallant scene known as "The broken bridge", one of the most popular models of the figurative repertoire of the eighteenth century, repeatedly produced in later times due to its decorative success.

The composition shows a courtly scene of narrative character: a young lady, dressed in a floral dress and feathered headdress, pretends to cover her face in a gesture of modesty while being helped by her lover, who holds her up after the supposed incident of the broken bridge. At her feet, a putto symbolically intervenes in the scene, underlining the amorous and playful character of the episode. The theatricality of the set and the interaction between the figures fully respond to the rococo taste, where wit and gallantry are the thematic axis.

The chromatic richness of the enamels, the meticulous treatment of the applied flowers and the delicacy of the folds and expressions are evidence of the high technical quality of the workmanship. The base, decorated with a golden border, provides visual stability and reinforces the refinement of the whole.

Meissen porcelain, born in 1710, quickly established itself as a benchmark of luxury and quality in Europe. Its iconic mark of the two crossed swords, introduced in 1720, is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the world. Initially inspired by oriental porcelain, Meissen evolved from rococo to neoclassicism and, in the 19th century, recovered its essence with the second rococo, creating pieces and sculptures of great artistic value.
