BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

"Harlequin Family". MEISSEN, ca. 1870
After a model by Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706-1775).
Sculptural ensemble in glazed porcelain.
With manufacturing mark on the base.
Measurements: 19 x 8 x 10 cm.

Delicate sculptural set in enameled porcelain belonging to the famous manufacture of Meissen, representing a scene of the Harlequin Family, model originally conceived by Johann Joachim Kaendler, one of the most outstanding modelers of the Saxon factory.

The composition shows a couple linked to the universe of the Commedia dell'Arte: Harlequin, recognizable by his polychrome rhombus costume and his lively expression, holds a child with a dynamic gesture while interacting with his companion, configuring a domestic scene full of grace and theatricality. The chromatic richness of the glazes, the meticulous treatment of the folds and the delicacy in the expression of the faces are evidence of the high technical quality characteristic of Meissen in the second half of the 19th century.

Models like this one were part of the gallant and theatrical repertoire that reached great popularity in the 18th century and was repeatedly produced in the 19th century due to its decorative and collecting success. The scene combines sculptural virtuosity, narrative and ornamental refinement, with a naturalistic base adorned with enameled vegetal elements.

Meissen porcelain, born in 1710, quickly established itself as a benchmark of luxury and quality in Europe. Its iconic mark of the two crossed swords, introduced in 1720, is one of the oldest and most prestigious in the world. Initially inspired by oriental porcelain, Meissen evolved from rococo to neoclassicism and, in the 19th century, recovered its essence with the second rococo, creating pieces and sculptures of great artistic value.
