DESCRIPTION
Valencian School. End of XVIII century.
"St. Joseph with Child".
Hand-painted stanniferous earthenware tiles.
Measurements: 54,5 x 41 cm, 67,5 x 53 cm (frame).
Valencian ceramic panel from the late eighteenth century, consisting of twelve tiles, representing St. Joseph with the Child Jesus. The saint appears standing, holding the Child in the left arm and carrying in the right the flowered rod, traditional iconographic attribute that alludes to his divine election as husband of the Virgin. Both figures have a nimbus, and are placed in a simple landscape environment with undulating mounds, schematic vegetation and small lateral trees. The composition is framed with a linear border in ochre tones and presents in the upper corners cloud masses of baroque character.
Made of stanniferous earthenware painted on a cover with metallic oxides, it uses a palette characteristic of late Valencian production: a predominance of ochre and orange combined with copper green, blue and manganese profiles. The drawing is defined by firm dark strokes and loose brushstrokes, with synthetic modeling in folds and anatomies, features typical of the serialized devotional production of the workshops of Manises and Valencia in the transition from late baroque to academicism.
