DESCRIPTION
DAUM NANCY. France, ca. 1900
Cameo vase with lake landscape.
Multilayered glass with acid etched decoration.
Signed "Daum Nancy".
Measurements: 65 cm high.
Daum vase made of multilayer glass, with acid-etched lake landscape decoration, a characteristic example of the technical refinement achieved by the manufacture of Nancy around the turn of the century. The piece has a stylized silhouette, bulbous body and long neck, which accentuates the verticality of the composition.
The decoration is organized by a landscape of trees in dark silhouette, cut out against a gradient background in reddish tones. This contrast generates a pronounced twilight effect, typical of Daum's modernist language.
The cameo glass process, worked by means of superimposed layers, makes it possible to create different planes of depth, reinforcing the sensation of a nocturnal landscape or sunset. The signature "Daum Nancy" integrated into the decoration confirms its belonging to one of the great European Art Nouveau glass manufacturers.
The Daum house, founded in Nancy in the nineteenth century, achieved international recognition under the direction of Auguste and Antonin Daum, becoming one of the great names of Art Nouveau glass along with Émile Gallé. His pieces stand out for technical research, the use of acid etching, enamels, inclusions and decorations inspired by nature. Daum's production is represented in institutions such as the Musée de l'École de Nancy, the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
