BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Table lamp; France, 20th century
Bent glass; metal
Signed: "Galle"
In working condition
Measurements: 55 x 35 x 35 cm.

Acid-etched glass table lamp, signed "Gallé." Consisting of two elements—a shade and a base—made of amber- and orange-toned glass, decorated with wisteria, hanging clusters, and foliage, fading into greenish and dark tones at the base. The shade features the same floral motif distributed across its entire surface, while the base continues the decoration with wisteria branches. The piece retains its original metal mounting for securing the shade.

Émile Gallé (Nancy, 1846–1904) was the founder and leading figure of the Nancy School and one of the central figures of French Art Nouveau, renowned for his technique of bent and acid-etched glass featuring naturalistic plant and floral motifs, with a particular fondness for wisteria, thistles, and wildflowers. After his death in 1904, the factory continued to operate under the direction of his son-in-law, Paul Perdrizet, and his widow, retaining the “Gallé” brand. This period, which lasted until the factory’s permanent closure in 1936, saw a gradual industrialization of production methods, with greater use of molds and semi-automatic engraving techniques that made it possible to significantly increase the volume of pieces produced, while still maintaining the decorative repertoire and aesthetic characteristic of the company.
