With a striking sculptural presence due to its size and the richness of its finish, this vase exemplifies Primavera’s interest in applying a modern conception of the decorative arts to domestic objects. An intense turquoise-green glaze covers an ovoid body with very refined lines, while glazes and drips in shades of green, brown, and dark colors cascade down from the rim. The irregularity of these layers, accentuated by the crackle and variations produced during firing, lends the surface a marked textural richness.
Primavera was the creative atelier of the Parisian department store Printemps, founded in 1912 on the initiative of René Guilleré and Pierre Laguionie with the aim of bringing modern design and the decorative arts to a broad audience. Its production included furniture, glass, textiles, and, most significantly, ceramics; Primavera’s designs were produced by various French manufacturers and workshops and marketed under the studio’s brand.
