DESCRIPTION
19th century Spanish miniature.
"Portrait of Ferdinand VII, ca. 1820.
Gouache on vellum.
Metal frame.
Size: 6 x 5 cm; 2.3 x 11 cm (frame).
The portrait offers us the effigy of one of the most controversial Spanish monarchs, King Ferdinand VII, popularly known by the nicknames of "The Desired One" and "The Felon". Recognised as a legitimate king by the Spanish people during the Napoleonic occupation, after being restored to the throne he revealed himself to be an absolutist ruler with a vengeful and treacherous personality, surrounded by a cohort of sycophants.
