La Ilustración Artística was a "weekly newspaper of literature, arts and sciences" edited by Montaner y Simón, whose printing house specialized in luxury illustrated publications since 1868. It included illustrations, first with woodcuts or galvanotypes and later with photoengravings and photographs.
Painter and draftsman, Nicanor Vázquez developed a style that combines realism with modernist resonances. His most characteristic works are graphic chronicles made for newspapers, in which he captured with precision and speed outstanding facts of daily life. He collaborated with "La Ilustración Artística" and "L'Esquella de la Torratxa", as well as with magazines in Argentina, where he lived in his maturity. Several posthumous exhibitions have been dedicated to him, especially in the Sala Rovira in Barcelona.
